CHARACTER
Character Name: Light Yagami
Character Age: 24
Canon: Murder Notebooks
Canon Point: Right before Mikami writes the names in the notebook
History: here is a summary of death note almost as long as death note is. The differences aren't huge, but I am taking him from the manga: there's more interaction with Mello there, and even though he hasn't experienced his death, his manga death is better fight me.
Personality: On the outside, Light seems practically perfect in every way. He's serious, intelligent, self-possessed, well-groomed--he presents himself as what he thinks is respectable and good, as what he's been told to be. He's soft-spoken, usually, though he can be roused to righteous anger, and he has a strong sense of right and wrong that is compassionate and generally on the side of the law. However, Light's exterior is in large part a performance: the sense of right and wrong he professes to have in front of police officers, for example, is rather different from what he actually believes. Light acts however he feels will be most conducive to achieving his goals, whether that's getting straight As or convincing people he isn't a murderer. This didn't just happen as a result of the Kira case. All his life, Light has known what he is expected to be, and all his life, he has been able to be that very easily. He was never really disciplined when he was younger because he was good at being good, and his parents figured that what they were doing was working: they raised a thoughtful, brilliant son with top grades who didn't get in trouble. Who cares if he has no real interests or hobbies (besides tennis in middle school) outside of schoolwork? What could possibly be wrong?

Because of all this, Light was never really challenged, and being smarter than anyone else around him meant that he could talk his way out of anything. Light was never held accountable for anything he did growing up, so the end result is a person who externally fits perfectly into the mold of whatever socal position he's in and comes off as polite but on the inside judges the shit out of everybody around him. He's pretty cold, too, if he doesn't have a reason to be friendly; frankly I'm amazed he even had friends in high school since all we see him do is shoot them down when they ask to hang out and doesn't seem close to them at all. Light is a conceited genius who feels like no one else is on his level and therefore forms no meaningful bonds with them. The only person who was on his level got murdered, though, so make of that what you will.

So, we've covered the outside: mild-mannered, brilliant, virtuous, sensible, flawless, a little boring because he's got no hobbies besides school/work and a little cold to his friends, but pretty normal. Let's talk about the rotten core, shall we? But see, Light Yagami is like one of those super smart dog breeds that, if you don't discipline them properly or give them enough to do, will chew up your whole house and pee on everything you own. Light thinks he became Kira 75% out of philanthropy and justice, 5% because he was bored, and 20% out of extreme narcissim because he'd make a freaking awesome god. In reality, it's only about 10% out of philanthropy and justice, with a fairly even split between doing it because it's exciting and doing it because he's so darned smart. Light is almost always the smartest person in the room, and therefore he doesn't question the idea that his own conclusions are the correct ones. Light's conceited, vain, and narcissistic--he's quite frankly so far up his own ass that whoever could pull him out would be crowned king of all England. Even as an adult, Light never questions the conclusions he drew about the world when he was a teenager; Light Yagami has never really grown up.

When things go wrong, Light gets angry. He's more than capable of losing his cool, though he's good at keeping it together until he can do it in private or in front of someone who can see his shitfit without consequences. He will destroy anyone who gets in his way and take advantage of anyone he thinks is useful. He's terribly misogynist and feels like women are emotional and petty, despite being emotional and petty himself. He can't stand losing and hates looking stupid, though he's willing (grudgingly) to let others underestimate him.

I suppose I should talk about his good points. Light Yagami, while an absolute monster, does have people he cares about. The person he cares for most in the world is Sayu; Light has a soft spot for his family. (It doesn't stop him from using them and even being willing to consider killing them, but the sentiment is there. He hesitates when it comes to the prospect of murdering the Yagamis in a way he doesn't hesitate about murdering anyone else.) He also does care about humanity, but he cares about it as a whole, in a very detached and general sense, and only about the part of it that he has decided is "good." ...yeah, that's all I've got as far as good points are concerned. Uh....he's good-looking? And women find him incredibly charming and not pretentious or condescending at all? He's very good at faking being a kind person very convincingly and so might wind up helping you if it is conducive to his plan?

I apologize for him in advance.

Inventory: The clothes on his back and a watch with a hidden compartment that contains a needle and a small piece of the Death Note.
Abilities: His superpowers all come from the murder notebook, which he won't have here. If you want to de-power his scrap of notebook in his watch and make it useless, that's completely fine by me, but since he's only got one very small piece and death is impermanent, he won't use it lightly. Light's abilities also include being exactly as smart as the narrative needs him to be to be impressive, natural charisma, excellent lying skills, picking women up using incredibly lame lines about destiny despite being an extremely boring person with no hobbies, beating L at tennis, and eating potato chips so the salt sparkles without making a mess all over his homework. Oh yeah and he has police training, and is also very smart and logical and resourceful.
Flaws: HAHAHA. HAHAHAHA. SWEET JESUS WHERE DO I BEGIN. Okay. So Light Yagami is conceited, vain, brutally ruthless, misogynistic, disdainful of anyone he sees as less skilled than he is, and also uh also happens to be a mass murderer. He doesn't actually know himself very well at all, and he thinks he's changing the world for the sake of humanity and nobly sacrificing his own morality to do it. However, it is also very much a power trip for him, as well as a thing he did because he was bored. This is a thing he's aware of, that he admitted to Ryuk. Light gets over the horror of murdering someone very quickly, and not long after, he loses ight of the fact that his goal was to create a better world and gets overinvested in the pissing contest between him and Wammy's House. Changing the world becomes secondary to winning, and Light is willing to sacrifice just about anything in order to win. He's pretty much incapable of romantic love and uses people with feelings for him with no remorse. He justifies awful, awful things to himself for the sake of his ~grand vision~ of a better world. He's one big ball of flaws in a trenchcoat and tie pretending to be a person.
